Types of Dental Sedation
Dr. Terry Deeter has been performing sedation dentistry since 2003, allowing hundreds of patients to undergo dental procedures in a semi-conscious state. Dr. Luke and Dr. Matt offer nitrous oxide and Dr. Terry offers three types of sedation:
- IV (intravenous)
- Nitrous oxide (laughing gas)
- Oral (pill)
An oral sedative is best for longer appointments. Our dentists can provide you with an oral sedative to take about an hour before your appointment. You should plan to have someone else drive you to and from our office if you are given an oral sedative for your procedure.
Nitrous oxide is frequently requested by patients who become nervous once they are in our office and ready for their procedure. Nitrous oxide is often referred to as laughing gas, but in reality, it makes most patients feel very relaxed and talkative. Our dentists may provide you with nitrous oxide before placing your IV.
IV sedation is frequently requested for procedures which will take less than 2 hours. While under IV sedation, you will not be unconscious. You will be in a semi-conscious state which will allow you to answer questions and follow instructions. However, you will remember almost nothing from the time that you are under sedation.
